Nevada deputy killed in line of duty; suspect also dead

CARSON CITY, Nev. -- Officials say a Nevada sheriff's deputy is dead after a man opened fire on officers responding to a domestic violence call.

Authorities say the man was later found dead at the scene of the confrontation, which happened a little after 2 a.m. Saturday in a suburban neighborhood in East Carson City.

Carson City sheriff's officials say deputies were responding to reports of domestic battery and found an injured woman. A man came out of the house within minutes and exchanged gunfire with the deputies, fatally shooting one of them.

Additional officers responded and removed three children from the house. They ranged in age from eight to 13.

The deputy's name was not released, but CBS affiliate KTVN in Reno reported that he was a nine-year veteran of the department. Another deputy described him as "a father, a friend and a good cop."

The Reno Police Department has taken over the investigation.
