New York- Republican presidential candidate and Texas Sen. Ted Cruzhas criticized Donald Trump for embodying "New York Values." This has come out in campaign ads, during debates and on the trail.

In a January GOP debate in South Carolina, Cruz tried to explain: "Everyone understands the values in New York City are socially liberal, pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage and focus around money and the media."

But Trump has responded several times, including last Thursday at a New York State Republican Party annual Gala.

"New York values were on display for all to see in the aftermath of 9/11 - a strike at the heart of our city and our nation. In our darkest moments, as a city, we showed the world the very, very best in terms of bravery and heart and soul that we have in America."

CBS News wanted to find out what New York values mean to people in the city.

"[New York has] very important and international cosmopolitan values. After 9/11 New York showed immense strength so it's a very respectable city," Giorgia Caruso, an Italian native now living in New York, told CBS News.

"New York values are so attractive because it's a large loving community of people of diverse backgrounds," offered Raquel Prolman.

"I would say equality, we accept everyone and we love one another," Vanessa Senat said.
