UC Berkeley says its student among dead in Nice, France, attack

BERKELEY, California - University of California, Berkeley, officials confirmed Sunday that one of their students was among the dead after a truck attack on a crowd on Bastille Day in Nice, France.

Nicolas Leslie is the third American confirmed among the victims. An Austin-area father and son who were vacationing with their family are also among those who died in the attack, relatives said Friday.

Leslie, 20, was originally unaccounted for after the Thursday night massacre that killed at least 84 people.

Leslie was among 85 Berkeley students attending the program titled "Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Europe," the school said.

"This is tragic, devastating news," UC Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirks said in a statement. "All of us in the UC Berkeley family -- both here on campus, and around the world -- are heartbroken to learn that another promising young student has been lost to senseless violence. I join Nick's parents, friends and the entire campus community in condemning this horrific attack, and in mourning the loss of one of our own."

Two students in the program suffered broken legs from the attack and were receiving treatment in a hospital, the school said. A third had a broken foot. None of the students were identified.

Three students in the program have chosen to return to the U.S. early. The program ends on July 24.

Sean Copeland, 51, and his son Brodie, 11, were killed Thursday evening, family friend Jess Davis said.
