Woman’s body found in garbage bag, burned beyond recognition
NEW YORK -- A woman's body was found burned beyond recognition Tuesday in East Harlem, CBS New York reports.
The Fire Department was called to the scene at 6:30 a.m. When they arrived, firefighters found the body in a 9th floor stairwell. Authorities said it was in a black garbage bag.
Police believe the woman was killed in one building and then dragged in the garbage bag to another building across the street, where they found it on fire.
NYPD Deputy Chief Christopher McCormick said there was a blood trail.
"We have blood in the hallway, we have blood in the lobby and the elevator," he said. "The body was removed from one building to another building."
It appears that after dumping the body, the suspect went back across the street and barricaded himself in an apartment with a woman in her 60s and two children, according to investigators.
"We encountered a male who was attempting suicide," McCormick said. "Rendered him aid. They saved him. They brought him to Harlem Hospital. He's still alive now at Harlem Hospital."
That suspect had self-inflicted wounds to the neck and wrist, according to authorities.
Charges against the suspect are pending.
